The European Union uses «Captain Euro» to denounce and make fun of countries
that are not a member of the union.
The campaign directed towards children and youth, uses the character
«Captain Euro» in order to convince the youngest members that it is best to
be apart of the union as everything beyond is evil.
The EU commission wishes to build a stronger EU identity among ordinary
people and has started with the youngest. In the campaign, the members of
non-member countries are portrayed as greedy, evil, and polluting.
High mountains and a king
In the comic «The war of the strawberry
ice cream», EU children are taken prisoner by evil people who live in a
country outside the EU, in a country that is described as having high
mountains, boarders and levies, and ruled by a king.
Educational
Even if the country looks a lot like Norway, EU’s
ambassador in Norway, Percy Westerlund, said the country described could be
any country outside the union.
«I think this is good, it’s an education way of teaching children about the
EU idea,» Westerlund said to TV 2 Nyhetene.
Captain Euro to the rescue
The campaign introduces children to
the super hero Captain Euro, who fights for a unified Europe without
boarders. Enemies are everyone who is against EU, and they are portrayed as
evil, dirty terrorists who pollute the environment.
Captain Euro became a little too heavy, even for the most eager in the EU
commission. However, the advertisement agency 12 stars continues to
distribute the films, the comics, and the games about the Captain Euro and
his team.
